30 Years Ago: A Black-Jewish Alliance Took on Our Enemies and Won

A black-Jewish triumph three decades on Three decades ago, a civil war erupted in Harlem when reports describing an ongoing Islamic trade in black slaves in Mauritania and Sudan broke into the black media. Black, white, and Jewish Americans, as well as African refugees, led by the American Anti-Slavery Group, all banded together to expose this modern-day evil to public scrutiny. Perhaps the movement’s brightest star, however, was the late journalist Sam Cotton (1947 – 2003), an unsung American hero, whose courage and passion brought this inconvenient truth to the black community. His shocking articles in New York’s black press brought Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam out into the streets to oppose the cause of freeing black slaves from Muslims. This eventually exposed them to many as betrayers, not leaders, of black people. Exactly 30 years ago, on May 26, 1995, Farrakhan’s main spokesman, Abdul Akbar Muhammad, went on the PBS show Tony Brown’s Journal to debate Sam and Sheikh Anwar McKeen, a black Sudanese Muslim who wanted to tell black Americans what the Arabs were doing to his people. Muhammad used his time to warn that the information about slavery in Sudan was part of a “Jewish conspiracy,” and later blamed the ADL — of all organizations! — for helping to orchestrate this libel against “the religion of Islam” and the NOI’s friends in Sudan’s Muslim Brotherhood government. “Special interest group[s],” “Jewish organizations,” and “especially the Zionists,” Akbar ranted, were “financing” this attack on the Sudan, the Nation of Islam, and the “movement of Islam in the world.” Unsurprisingly, Sam’s well-reasoned arguments trounced Muhammad’s demented, conspiratorial ramblings. “I am discussing slavery in Mauritania and in Sudan,” Sam said. “Now, for you to drop the discussion to the level of Jewish and black relationships… that’s not the discussion at this particular point.” When the cameras stopped, all a humiliated Akbar could do was whine that Tony Brown “set me up” and that he was not given “equal time” to spew the NOI’s version of the facts. He even tried (incompetently) to blackmail Sam and his editor, Andy Cooper, into no longer covering the slavery issue. Eventually, Tony Brown agreed to a solo interview, during which Akbar soundly demonstrated that the NOI had lost the argument. This televised debate marked the beginning of our coalition’s victory in the battle for black public opinion, and the Nation of Islam’s inevitable fall. By going to war against concerned citizens of multiple colors and religions wanting only to end Arab slavery in Africa, Farrakhan revealed that he cared only about his financial connections to the Muslim world and not black slaves. In the years after this extraordinary confrontation, our coalition would: • Testify before Congress three times (in 1996, 1999, and 2000). • Publish articles in The Boston Globe and Wall Street Journal. • Be featured on national TV shows ranging from Dateline NBC to BET Talk. • Raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy back Sudanese slaves’ freedom. • Help push through the Sudan Peace Act of 2002, forcing the Sudanese government to begin negotiating a peace with the black, mostly Christian south and stop the slave raids. • Promote the black south’s secession from the north, creating the nation of South Sudan in 2011. A generation later, we have formed the African Jewish Alliance as the post-October 7 world’s resurrection of the American Anti-Slavery Group — bringing Jews, black Americans, Africans, and all concerned peoples together to confront jihadism and slavery. In short, so much is owed to Sam Cotton, who secretly went to Mauritania seven months after the Tony Brown showdown to document how Arabs held black slaves. His resulting 1998 book, Silent Terror, is an underground classic and heart-wrenching masterpiece. His untimely death at 56 on December 20, 2003, after a long battle with brain cancer robbed the modern-day abolitionist movement of its most charismatic leader. His gallant willingness to go into the darkest places to shine the light of truth remains as an example for noble souls everywhere.

Petition: Force Newton, Massachusetts, to Condemn its Teachers’ Union’s Anti-Semitism

The city of Newton must condemn the Massachusetts Teachers Association As we have documented previously, the Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) is a proudly anti-Semitic indoctrination system. Their curricula, as confirmed by the AJC, is openly hostile to Israel and teaches children in public schools provable lies — even vulgar stereotypes — about Jews. Therefore (if you are a resident of Newton, Massachusetts), please sign the Israeli-American Civic Action Network’s newest petition, demanding that the city of Newton condemn the MTA and ban “use of MTA-issued content unless formally reviewed and approved by the district.” We can confirm that doing so will have an effect, as neighboring Brookline successfully passed a similar anti-MTA resolution just days ago. Another sign that speaking out and standing up can work is what happened exactly one year ago today. On May 9, 2024, the Newton Free Library was scheduled to host an event featuring an anti-Semitic photographer named Skip Schiel, whose blood libel “exhibit,” entitled “The Ongoing & Relentless Nakba: The Palestinian Catastrophe of 1948,” was on show. Newton’s Jewish mayor, Ruthanne Fuller, ignored Jewish residents’ pleas that the event be an open debate about the exhibit — not just the photographer’s rant and then a panel of Arab activists’ diatribes afterwards. In disgust and frustration, local Jews and even some Christian and Iranian Zionists came to the library to protest. Jill Charney, the event’s MC and a member of the anti-Israel group Jewish Voice for Peace, immediately ordered everyone inside the policeman-laden function room to remain “100% quiet” and said that the only acceptable questions from the audience would be pre-screened and written on index cards. The outraged Jews began shouting “Shame!” and “Anti-Semite!” at Charney and Schiel, and then spontaneously began singing “Ha-Tik’vah.” In response, the anti-Israel thugs, many wearing masks, screamed typical genocidal slogans and even added in “Judaism, yes! Zionism, no!” Eventually, the commotion proved too much and the organizers aborted the event. Because they peacefully refused to endure abandonment by their leadership and slander by their enemies, Jews were not defamed in their own public library. When black Christians aren’t murdered by Jews, nobody cares On February 13, members of the ISIS-affiliated Allied Democratic Forces beheaded 70 Christians in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This primitive slaughter made little news outside Christian human rights circles. Why? Because these were black Christians killed by black Muslims. Imagine if they had been Americans or Europeans — and if Israelis had beheaded them. This is worse than “no Jews, no news.” This is the chic racism of the “human rights” community and of the media. Salacious and Phallacious: An Artifact of Columbia’s Worst Terrorist Professor

Flashback: one anti-Semitic Arab professor’s propaganda went well below the belt In 2004, we set out to document harrowing accounts of Jewish students being harassed by Arab professors at Columbia. The result was Columbia Unbecoming, the first documentary to expose institutional anti-Semitism at an Ivy League university. Today, 21 years later, Columbia is the epicenter of the Muslim Brotherhood, Iran, and their various proxies’ takeover of American higher education. One Columbia professor who made no secret of his support for Hamas after October 7 was Joseph Massad, who has taught as Professor of Modern Arab Politics and Intellectual History at the Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies since 1999. On October 8, 2023, he published a feverish rant in which he expressed “jubilation and awe” at the previous day’s genocidal events. Two decades earlier, he had written in Al-Ahram, Egypt’s partially government-owned equivalent of The New York Times, that Israel’s greatest achievement has been the “transformation of the Jew into the anti-Semite, and the Palestinian into the Jew.” Less well known, however, is a sordid and (for Massad) embarrassing incident recounted in our film, in which then-student Noah Liben recalled a particularly vile and absurd assertion Massad made during a class. According to Liben, Professor Massad once attempted to make a “linguistic” point about Zionism by saying that, in Hebrew, the word ziyon (which does not exist) supposedly means “penis” (which it does not). This was apparently meant to denigrate Zionism as but a middle school boys’ bathroom joke, but Liben and his friends pointed out that “Zionism” actually comes from the (real) word Tziyon (צִיּוֹן), referring to the Hill of Zion. As pro-Israel advocate David Olesker sums up Massad’s penile pontifications, perhaps Massad was just “guilty of a phallucy.” Boorish to be sure, but this is quite polite for an ideologue who has not only praised the October 7 massacre but claimed that the Protestant reformers of the sixteenth century were actually the ones who first “link[ed] modern Jews of Europe to the ancient Hebrews of Palestine” and that “[t]he Nazis would not be an exception in this anti-Semitic chain of pro-Zionist enthusiasts.” As the film demonstrates, he also has a long history of bullying outspoken Jewish and Israeli students who dare to question his honesty and professionalism. Most importantly, Massad is among the most prominent heirs to the legacy of PLO propagandist (and certified fake Palestinian) Edward Said — friend of the young Barack Obama, arguably the founder of “post-colonial studies,” and mainstay of Columbia’s Middle East Studies scene from 1963 until his death in 2003. Said’s pro-terrorist advocacy and hatred of both America and Israel long ago became foundational beliefs at Columbia, with his intellectual disciples like Massad due a great share of guilt for nearly 18 months of unrelenting campus jihad. In other words, one could say that, through Massad and others, the late Said has been Columbia’s de facto president for decades. Perhaps, though, given the Trump administration’s recent threats, “President” Said’s posthumous salary may endure a well-deserved circumcision.

History Repeats Itself: Arabs Torture Jews as They Did Africans

A generation apart, Islamic terrorists tortured kidnapped Jews and enslaved Africans identically We all remember the hideous video of former hostage Naama Levy’s barbaric abduction; but most looked upwards towards her blood-soaked sweatpants and not at her right ankle — the Achilles tendon slashed to prevent her escape. As we show in our newest AJA social media video, Hamas’s North African cousins denigrated their black slaves in the same way back in the 1990s and before. The archival footage shown in the video is clipped from a bone-chilling undercover investigation conducted in Sudan by an heroic doctor (aptly) named Kevin Vigilante in 1995. Student Leader Tells Bibi: The Jewish Establishment Has Failed Us

Jewish student hero Shabbos Kestenbaum tells Bibi that establishment leaders failed him At a recent meeting with Bibi Netanyahu, Shabbos Kestenbaum, hero of the battle against anti-Semitism at Harvard, made it clear that he was deeply “disappointed” in the “Jewish non-profit” world and “establishment” organizations. “Young American Jews,” he said, held the key to safeguarding the Jewish future in this country, while so many of the organizations tasked with protecting it — on campuses in particular — had failed. It makes young American Jews like Shabbos all the more heroic given that this failure is not new, as we have documented for more than two decades, going back to our film Columbia Unbecoming in 2004. At that time, non-profits like the ADL, AJC, and especially the Federations refused to tackle the problem of campus anti-Semitism — then much more manageable — and abandoned future students like Shabbos to their fate — or, in his case, to become their rightful replacements. As shown in our 2023 book, Betrayal: The Failure of American Jewish Leadership, community leadership has long embraced the wrong priorities and doesn’t know how to fight in the war against American Jews which is already underway. There certainly has been marked improvement since October 7, but the emergence of new, young leaders, who can speak directly and eloquently to Israelis and their government, is especially heartening.

Sign Petition: Anti-Semitic Massachusetts Teachers Association Must Be Held Accountable

Sign a petition to force the Massachusetts state legislature to cut ties with its anti-Semitic teachers’ union For more than a decade, the Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) has verifiably encouraged defamation of Israel and the Jewish people in state public schools. APT spent eight years (2011 – 2019) fighting MTA-approved curriculum in Newton, Massachusetts, in which children (many of them Jewish) were taught certifiable lies about Israel and Islamic history. Some of the curriculum was of Saudi and Qatari origin, but the school committee — and teachers’ union — stonewalled concerned citizens and refused to openly discuss anything. Since then, the MTA — when its members are not on strike — has provably continued with its anti-Israel bias, as documented in a recent AJC report. Some actions included hosting a workshop on “anti-Palestinian racism” and distributing vulgar, overtly anti-Semitic flyers (below) as educational “resources.” Max Page, the union’s long-time boss, has denied any abuse of his office or support for anti-Semitism, though his answers at a recent hearing at the Massachusetts State House leave much to be desired. On account of this vile conduct, the Israeli-American Civic Action Network (ICAN) has created a petition demanding that the state government sever all ties with the MTA in the event Page is not replaced, and if the union does not completely reverse all of its anti-Jewish policies. Jewish Leadership Fail: Ad against Anti-Semitism to Feature Farrakhan Supporter

Foundation to Combat Antisemitism’s Super Bowl ad features open Farrakhan supporter Snoop Dogg Bob Kraft’s Foundation to Combat Antisemitism — whose website never mentions anti-Semitism prominently — produced an ad to run during the Super Bowl featuring former Patriots star Tom Brady and rapper Snoop Dogg. The two men trade generic sentences featuring the word “hate” and then (correctly) agree that hate is pointless. What viewers may not know is that Snoop Dogg is an open supporter of Louis Farrakhan — one of America’s most venomous anti-Jewish hatemongers. In 2019, when Facebook and Instagram removed Farrakhan’s social media accounts, the rapper expressed his outrage and sympathy for his “dear brother.” As Fox News reported at the time, the rapper engaged in a profanity-drenched rant on behalf of the Nation of Islam’s leader. “I stand with him. I’m with him,” he told his millions of followers. “If you’re down with it like I’m down with it, post your favorite Mr. Farrakhan videos on your Instagram and Facebook page,” he said, and asked the Internet to “Show some love to a real brother” because “All he ever do [sic] is tell the truth.” Needless to say, this is unacceptable negligence on the part of the Kraft Foundation. This is yet another example of how (not all but) many Jewish leaders are not serious about understanding the threats Jews face.

Qatar is Attempting to Buy the Trump Administration’s Influence over Israel

Is President Trump’s “Middle East envoy” bought by Qatar? Jews across the world were shocked when it was made clear that President-elect Trump, through his “Middle East envoy” Steve Witkoff, had strong-armed Israel into accepting the Biden administration’s disastrous ceasefire deal with Hamas. Witkoff even reportedly ordered Netanyahu (with terse vulgarity) to accept the deal immediately, and not take a pause for Shabbat. As JNS host Caroline Glick reveals in two major video interviews (above and below), and Rabbi Pesach Wolicki writes at Israel 365, Witkoff is a paid-for operative of the terrorist state of Qatar. In addition to having said on Fox News that the Hamas-sponsoring prime minister of Qatar was “doing God’s work” in facilitating the deal, as Wolicki writes, “The damning evidence begins with a real estate deal gone wrong. In 2013, Witkoff, a New York real estate investor, purchased the prestigious Park Lane Hotel with Malaysian businessman Jho Low for $654 million. When their luxury apartment conversion plans collapsed and Low was exposed for embezzling billions from Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, Witkoff found himself trapped in a financial quagmire.” After Low ran away to Cyprus, Qatar came “to the rescue in August 2023 with a $623 million bailout. The timing couldn’t be more suspect — just as Trump’s campaign was gaining momentum, Qatar shrewdly purchased not just a hotel, but influence within Trump’s inner circle. Their investment has paid off handsomely, as Witkoff’s appointment as special envoy has advanced Qatar’s agenda of preserving Hamas’s iron grip on Gaza.” Qatar is Iran’s main beach head of influence in the Sunni Arab world, using its titanic wealth not only to fund Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood but to tempt weak, greedy Westerners into advancing its projects. Given President Trump’s historical support for Israel, the views of his cabinet, and his heartening Inauguration Day executive orders — which include empowering ICE to deport anti-Semitic foreign students — it is unwise to panic or rage; but is wise to be stern and unsettled. It was unacceptable for the United States to treat Israel in this way during the previous administration, and Trump’s accession makes no difference to that standard. So, too, Qatar, the leading Sunni state sponsor of worldwide jihad, must only be sanctioned, punished, marginalized, humiliated, and denounced — certainly when it paid Hamas to kidnap the Israeli hostages in the first place. Ironically, as Yigal Carmon, director of the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), tells Caroline Glick (below), Witkoff “is absolutely right” that Qatar is “‘doing God’s work’ — with one change. Instead of ‘God’s work,’ it’s ‘Allah’s work.’”
